Stories about the Songs
(These songs are on the album "Hold The Light")
Trumpet And Drums
Originally written for our Millennium Holiday Club, surprisingly
in the summer of 1999 (to get in before the rush!), this is
really a take on those psalms towards the end where they're
praising God lots. The kids love making the noises that go with
this song - and so do some adults! I've taken out the original
references to the year 2000, so hopefully this will become
timeless.
Good Soil
The parable of the sower, the seed, or the soil, depending on how
you interpret it, is in Matthew 13. This song looks at it from
the angle of the soil - which I've taken to mean us. We don't
normally sing the rap, but if you're feeling adventurous..
Clap And Sing
This was my first attempt at writing a "kids" song. I
had been impressed with the way Ishmael had started giving
children a set of songs to call their own, rather than being
stuck with the songs their parents had sung, so I set about the
task locally. The final verse was later added by Brent Walker,
one of the chldren in our Sunday School, who provides a second
guitar for worship. The grown-ups seem to like this one, too,
although smeone once complained about being told to jump in the
air.
Big Star
This song will always be connected with our "Drop & Shop"
project, when the Church offered to look after children while
their parents did the Christmas shopping. Good idea? Don't expect
it to work the first year you try it. Anyway, we needed a song
for the children to learn and then sing to the rest of the Church
at the Nativity service. Enter the story of the shepherds in a
rap style. For the more observant, the star only appeared to the
wise men, but when I'd written verses for them, the whole thing
was too long. The star remains, as it was a sign to all, whether
or not they saw it and followed it.
