A live version of "Back To The Cross", from a concert in 1989
I bought my first guitar in 1982. Armed with this and a teach-yourself book,
I set about writing songs and recording onto a cassette player. "Back To The Cross"
was the first original song to appear. Later in life, I worked with Phil Broome,
who was in the Trinity Church (Harrow) Youth Group.
Phil added some keyboard parts to some of my songs - we added a couple
of covers and Rupert Davis wrote a song specially for us. And behold,
Howard's Broome Cupboard were formed - for one concert only.
Later, Rupert joined us to become Phil Rupert And Trevor - PRAT.
Here's the mp3.
Photo of a performance of "Arts Student Blues" in 1982
Here's a jpg - the other person in the picture is Stuart Townend.
This was at Sussex University.
The Christian fellowship had a barbecue followed by entertainments, of which this was part.
We recorded the song for University Radio Falmer - mp3
(Please note - I do not believe that all Arts Students are layabouts, or that all People who read Socialist Worker put action above thought, but there were enough people at Sussex Uni at the time who seemed to fit the stereotypes to make this worthwhile. Performances of the song since then have removed the reference to Socialist Worker, which I believe to be an essential publication for maintaining an informed democracy, which is what our country should be.)
